It is customary at the beginning of any pow wow to honor veterans in the Grand Entry where the eagle staff and the American flag are in prominent view together. Because Native Americans have a strong sense of community, honor, pride and responsibility there has always been a disproportionate number of them in the armed forces. Of all ethnic groups they have the highest per capita in service to their country. An estimated 12,000 served in World War One although they did not become citizens until the Snyder Act of 1924. When the population of Native Americans was an estimated 350,000 some 44,000 served in World War Two. Most notable were the Navajo Code Talkers who used their language to send messages that were never decoded by the Japanese. Black Lodge Singers honors veterans of today and those that served in the past by singing and dancing in their honor.
