Teenager, Shane Chasing Horse is a member of the Dog Soldiers gang on the Pine Ridge Reservation. His grandfather, Old Pete Chasing Horse, is worried that his grandson maybe headed for a life of crime. As the two travel across South Dakota to the All Nations Storytelling Pow-Wow in Albuquerque, N.M., Old Pete tells stories from the Lakota, Kiowa, Blackfeet, Northern Cheyenne, Pawnee, Pacific Northwest Tribes and others to illustrate life lessons for his grandson. Each story takes us into the world of that tribe where the legends of that tribe are revealed in sometimes fantastic ways; dragons rising out of the water and visions of locomotives racing through a herd of buffalo to siblings rising to the skies to become the Big Dipper.
A 3 hour movie with a huge cast of players too numerous to list and suitable for the whole family with the exception of a few fantasy scenes that might frighten very small children. Produced by Hallmark as a mini-series with a director’s commentary, Dreamkeeper is one of the best made films that has a modern cast and positive images of Indians. The special effects are fun to watch and there are bits of humor in it that make it a favorite among fans of Native film. Directed by Steve Barron and written by John Fusco. Strarring August Schellenberg, Eddie spears, Gary Farmer, John Trudell, Michael Greyeyes, Dakota House, Tantoo Cardinal, Gordon Tootoosis, Sheila Tousey, Floyd “Red Crow” Westerman and Scott Grimes. Rated PG
