Screenwriter Courtney Hunt and actor, Melissa Leo both garnered Oscar nominations for this gripping drama about two desperate mothers that form an unlikely friendship.
Melissa Leo plays Ray Eddy, a mother of two who feeds her two boys Tang and popcorn while her addicted gambler husband runs off with the down payment on their new double wide. Misty Upham plays Lila Littlewolf, a widowed Mohawk woman whose mother-in-law has absconded with her child. In desperation, Lila turns to smuggling illegal immigrants across the Canadian border via the frozen St. Lawrence River through Mohawk territory. When Ray Eddy shows up looking for her husband’s abandoned car the two women meet face to face and begin a journey that ends in a dangerous last ditch effort to save what little is left of their bereft lives.
